I met the concept of Wikis a few years ago when I had my GT class in the computer lab and they were all on Wikipedia changing the information on about everything to personalize it for the names of the students in the classroom. Anyone else in the world that was researching at that time was learning a very fractured version of History and Geography. Seeing how information was changing before my eyes as I went from machine to machine made me once again like to hold the printed word in my hand.
Now for me to learn more about Wikis from an academic viewpoint

This is something really neat. If all of the students had laptops we could do a brainstormning about a topic and end up creating something by the end of a period- groups that were not groups talking, but typing instead about something to organize. Interesting idea!!
I need to come up with some ideas to get them thinking, or writing along.
A continuing story about an area using physical features. Describing an area where someone writes something down, and then they read what has already been written and add to it. Neat

#15 Web 2.0 - and the future
I was 4 when I got my first Library Card at the downtown Public library ( the big old one)
This next lesson is probably going to be a very different library of the future
Wow!! I remember a librarian about 10 years ago saying that her budget for buying new books was disappearing and we would soon do all research on line.
I remember about 5-10 years ago how I would take classes to the library to do research.
My last library project was 2 years ago and most of the students did not do any work in the library but insisted they could do it all on line. And boy did they do it on line. When I googled their work several of them had done a very nice job of copy/ paste.
Libraries are changing. That is a given. I still like to sit down and hold the books in my hand. I can skim read books faster than the internet and I know of more synonyms for what I am looking for even though the internet can quickly search the page for a specific word.
Yes, you are teaching an old dog new tricks on this information. I do like to have a few old ice bergs of information around for when the internet is down or just refusing to work or-- technology problems that we all seem to get when we least expect them. I know a bulb can always burn out in an over head projector, but doing all things via an internet you have to worry about the bulb on the projector plus the computer, connection to the world- etc.
Is there an easy solution? or just have plan B, C, D, E, F, etc.

First, I could not watch the video on the home machine due to an appleworks problem. Thank goodness I had the school lapper going. Then, once the video started, what she was showing me was not at all what I had on my own machine. ( home page for technorati)
This one site could be my nemesis for a bit. But I did learn why I lack authority and I am ok with that,. Onward to more stuff
And where is the little heart I am supposed to click on?

I do have a blog there and I have claimed it. I wil do more searches at a later period.

I did like searching through Del.icio.us
I need to play a few more of the games I tagged. I did like the Chinese provinces. ( for the olympics of course) and I might bring my jigsaw puzzle of them to school ( to help those that need to see/ touch the shapes).
Prior to going to the lab I could get some bookmarks for the students to use, but of course I would have to check them out before hand. I am currently using my computer for the researching so I am not sure how much the districts firewall will get involved.

#12 Creating community Through commenting
I must say that I think I have figured out how to do this lesson. Have my blog open on one page and the direction thing opened on another computer. I bet though soon I am going to want 3 computers going. !!!
I understand applying the rules we have to answering e-mails are true here also. I am just questioning how many comments do I have time to make. The 100 people read but only one contributes does make sense. There are times when I wish I could just read some e-mails and not respond, but there if we do not get back to a parent in less than a few hours, more e-mail seem to fly.
Will your blog, and comments to others be in the front of a court room one day?
I do remember starting out a faculty meeting one year with that being the catch to get our attention. One little thing someone wrote in an e-mail ended up being projected on a big screen in addition to being on one of those big flip charts.

so, bottom line of this activity, read, read, read, and then send. Right?

This was better than I expected. I did join LibraryThing and I did list 5 books from the wonderful box of books ( xerox paper size) that I bought at a garage sale for $1.
Regarding using this in the classroom? Well, I can find books for me here and get their current event information about what is going on with books. I personally like to read the New York Times Sunday book review. I am assuming this will be along the same lines.

This sounds interesting. I am going to succeed on THIS THING. And I did not have to register or get a new password to accomplish this. ***** Warning*** I might be putting some cartoons on future worksheets!!! Did anyone else enjoy this task like I did? I must remember this one.
